Description

Get off the beaten Croatian tour track by spending the day in the high mountains visiting two lakes tucked along the border with Bosnia. After our alpine adventure, we’ll stop at a local farm to grab provisions for lunch, then end our tour in the late afternoon with a relaxing lunch at our biodiversity centre in Puljane. Join our naturalist guides to spend the day in Croatia’s beautiful mountains and discover a side of the country that tourists rarely see.

Our high alpine lakes tour departs at 8 AM from our research center in Puljane and lasts approximately four hours. We can arrange a transfer for you to Split for a small additional cost, which would pick you up one hour before the tour start time. This tour requires a moderate fitness level, as the closest lakes can be reached by a 10-minute walk from where we will park. You will also have the option to visit the higher lakes, requiring a 40-minute hike from our parking spot, if you are interested.

How to Book: This tour is currently available by inquiry only. Please fill out the form on the right if you are interested in joining us.

Itinerary

8 AM – Meet your guide at the Biota Biodiversity Centre in Puljane, Croatia. Please let us know if you require a transfer to make it to our Centre from Split.

8:15 AM – Depart for the mountains. It takes approximately an hour and a half to reach the spot where we will park to begin walking to the lakes, where we will wind through the beautiful Croatian countryside between villages and crystal-clear lakes and rivers.

8:45 AM – Visit to Knin Castle. We will stop briefly for a walking tour of the Knin Castle, one of the most beautiful, restored castles in the region. This castle, perched upon a hill that overlooks the valley, is a powerful cultural symbol for the country as the place where the first King of Croatia was crowned. We will guide you through the castle before continuing on our way to the lakes.

11 AM – After reaching our parking spot, you will begin our short hike to the lakes with our guides, who will teach you about the local mountain and forest ecosystems. You will have the option to stay at the lower lakes (10 min one way) or continue on our way to the upper lakes (40 min one way) if you are feeling adventurous. At the lakes, we will offer a local snack and an opportunity to rest and explore before heading back to our car.

2 PM – Depending which lakes we visit, our departure time will vary slightly. After finishing our hike, we’ll head back toward the biodiversity research center in Puljane for a late lunch in the garden. On our drive back, we’ll have an opportunity to stop for souvenirs in a mountain village, if you are interested. We will also make a quick stop at a local farm to stock up on cheese and produce for lunch.

3:30 PM – Join us for a late traditional lunch in the front lawn of the research center in Puljane. After lunch, you’ll learn about the biodiversity of Croatia and our conservation work in this area, as well as having a chance to explore our science labs and get a glimpse at the life of a field biologist.

When you are done exploring the center, we can provide some tips and ideas for places to stay, explore, swim, or eat in the surrounding areas as you plan the next steps in your trip. Or we can arrange to help you get back to Split to continue on your travels.
