The Open Water Course (OWD) is your first step on a journey of underwater exploration and learning how to dive. It is also the most important course in the scuba curriculum, as it will give you theory and practical knowledge for all your future adventures in diving. Each day of the course, you will have a theory lesson, which is followed by practical exercises in the water.
If you want to become certified to dive anywhere in the world, the OWD course is your first step. From here, you can take on additional courses to become an Advanced Diver or Rescue Diver, even during your time on Silba.

The Open Water Diver course consists of three main phases:

  • Knowledge Development ( online, independent study or in a classroom) to understand basic principles of scuba diving
  • Confined Water Dives to learn basic scuba skills
  • Open Water Dives to use your skills and explore!
  • Note: Course cost also includes official certification fees and paperwork.
Course Duration: 12-15 hours split evenly between theory courses (2hrs daily) and dive practicals (2 daily). On the final day, you will participate in a boat dive to explore Silba’s beautiful local ecosystems.
Note: The OWD course is only available for participants in the Volunteer Placement program on Silba Island.
